What led you to apply for a SkillBridge internship with General Dynamics Mission Systems?

Once accepted into the Hiring Our Heroes fellowship, I attended numerous informational seminars by prospective employers. General Dynamics Mission Systems piqued my interest and I was encouraged to search their careers page to find the potential positions that matched my skills/ambitions.

I knew of General Dynamics Mission Systems and their reputation for supporting the warfighters globally. This created a stronger connection for me. While I may not have been able to continue active duty, working for General Dynamics Mission Systems allows me to continue serving in a different capacity.

How did the SkillBridge / General Dynamics Mission Systems Military Internship Program help your transition from active duty to a civilian career?

This program made things seamless! I was so worried and stressed about what would happen after leaving the Air Force. Knowing that I was participating in a fellowship that had a job lined up at the end, eliminated my stress. Additionally, this program allowed me to build on my skills and gain valuable experience that propelled me forward.

What did you find most surprising or rewarding about the program?

I was elated at how accepting people are at General Dynamics Mission Systems! The flexibility and adaptability are beyond anything I've experienced to this point in my life. So, kudos to leadership for building such an environment. I was also surprised at how quickly I assimilated into the team. Zero hesitations, and my team just pulled me into the fold!

Do it! Apply now! The scope and scale that General Dynamics Mission Systems has in this industry is fantastic. There is an opportunity for every service member looking to make a transition. Best of all, the internships allow you to walk a mile in the job before going full-time. It's a wonderful thing knowing you're gaining experience and working towards a brighter future.

Justin Horsfall is a retired lieutenant colonel with 24 years total in the U.S. Army. He joined General Dynamics Mission Systems through the DoD SkillBridge program in September 2022 and was hired for a full-time position in January 2023.

What led you to apply for a SkillBridge internship with General Dynamics Mission Systems?

My time with the Acquisition Corps provided significant experience working with DoD contractors, which led to my interest in the SkillBridge opportunities available for the Phoenix area. Additionally, a couple of my mentors worked for General Dynamics Mission Systems after leaving government service, and they expressed that it's a great company to work for. I was pleased when a General Dynamics Mission Systems Director, who was also a retired Army Acquisition officer, reached out to me for an interview.

How did the SkillBridge / General Dynamics Mission Systems Military Internship Program help your transition from active duty to a civilian career?

It was an excellent stepping stone, and it couldn’t have worked out better for me. Even as an Army Acquisition officer and program manager, it was (and still is some days) an enormous transition that takes effort and commitment to learn such a challenging new role.

What would you tell others thinking about applying for the internship?

General Dynamics Mission Systems has experience with the SkillBridge internship program, so they made it effortless for me to approach them about an opportunity. I would recommend to others that they strive to attain the same transparency from their hosting company regarding permanent positions, compensation and timeline expectations.
